Studies on a serious outbreak of Aspidiotus destructor rigidus in the coconut-palms of Sangi (North Celebes)
Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 89, 83-123
Abstract: The subspecies rigidus of Aspidiotus destructor is described and illustrated from the island of Sangi, now called "Pulau Sangihe", North Sulawesi, Indonesia. This scale insect has caused serious damage to coconut palms on the island between 1925 to 1928. About 400,000 palms were damaged to a degree that they stopped nut production and 30,000 of them were killed as a result of the attacks. The new subspecies occurred together with the typical form of A. destructor on the island. The differences between both forms includes a) a tougher cuticle of the rigidus form, b) yellowish males as compared to the reddish males of the typical form, c) eggs deposited by the rigidus form are in an advanced stage of development on hatch sooner than in the typical form, d) the life cycle is longer in rigidus and e) there are differences in the host range of both forms, although in both cases coconut palms are the most common hosts.
