Stratiomyidae (scavengers - predators)
This family of flies contains 2,000 to 3,000 species. Most adults feed on pollen and nectar while the larvae are scavengers. However, the larvae of Inopus rubriceps damage sugarcane roots in Australia. This page deals with the species regarded as competitors and predators of pest insects. The former includes the black soldier fly which breeds in organic waste and competes with house flies and other nuisance flies. The adults are often black, with white, yellow or green markings or have a metallic colouration.
