Hermetia illucens (competitor) (Linnaeus) - (black soldier fly)
This species is a large fly (13-20 mm) which is widely distributed. The adults do not feed and the larvae breed in various organic materials, ranging from decaying plants to manure. It is found naturally in poultries and stables and is considered a valuable competitor to house flies and other nuisance flies.
The larvae can reduce manure waste by 50%. In contrast to house flies, the larvae do not carry bacteria or diseases and are capable of inactivating Escherichia coli and Salmonella. The adults rarely enter houses and have a short life span. In addition, the prepupae are also nutritous food for poultry, pigs or fish. For this, the prepupae can be killed by freezing, dried and formulated as a meal.
