Sonchus L. - (sow-thistles)
This genus contains around 80 species of mainly herbaceous plants. Several are widespread agricultural weeds and are common on roadsides. These include Sonchus oleraceus, S. arvensis, and S. asper. Affected crops include cereals, vineyards and field crops like beet or canola. The plants typically have well developed rhizomes, a basal rosette of irregularly lobed leaves and yellow composite flowerheads. They produce many feathery seeds that disperse by wind.
