Solanum mauritianum (weed) Scopoli - (earleaf nightshade)
This plant is a perennial woody shrub or small tree, native to South America. It has become an invasive environmental weed in parts of southern and eastern Africa, as well as in New Zealand and Australia. It is poisonous to humans, causing irritation and nausea when handled. Cutting is largely ineffective, since it resprouts quickly from the base.
The tree grows up to a height of 10 m, with large hairy leaves, and purple flowers. It has a high rate of seed production, and the seed bank persists in the soil, germinating when sufficient light is available.
