Smicronyx sordidus Leconte , 1876 - (grey sunflower seed weevil)
This weevil is widely distributed in North America and can be an economically important pest of sunflowers in some areas, often together with the red sunflower seed weevil, Smicronyx fulvus. The adult beetles feed on the buds and flowers, while the larvae develop inside the sunflower seeds. The mature larvae drop to the ground and pupate in the soil. There is one generation per year. In comparison to Smicronyx fulvus, S. sordidus is larger and covered with grey scales.
