Smicronyx Schönherr, 1843

This genus is widely distributed and includes more than 100 species of weevils. Their host plants are crops, parasitic weeds and various other plants. They typically breed in seed capsules like in parasitic plants, or in individual seeds. Several species are pests of sunflowers like the red sunflower seed weevil, Smicronyx fulvus which breeds inside sunflower seeds in North America.

The adults are small, 2-4 mm long. The antennae have a 7-segmented funicle and a 3 segmented club. The first segment of the funicle (after the scape) is always the longest and the 3 segments of the club may be difficult to distinguish. The body is usually covered by coloured scales.
