The shrub is native to South America and an introduced, leguminous weed in South Africa and some other regions. It is often introduced as an ornamental but can escape cultivation. It grows in riparian and wetland areas and can replace native vegetation.
The shrubs reach a height of up to 4 m. The flowers are bright red (in contrast to the mostly yellow flowers of other Sesbania species) and 2-3 cm long. The pods are elongated and winged, 6-8 cm long and contain up to 9 seeds.
