Senecio vulgaris (weed) L. - (common groundsel)

This weed is native to temperate parts of Europe and Asia and has spread to other regions like the Americas and Australia. It is found in a wide range of environments, is toxic to livestock, causing poisoning, and also affects a large variety of crops. Few herbicides are available for effective control.

S. vulgaris can flower throughout the year but does not tolerate high temperatures. The plants usually grow to a height of around 20-30 cm and only propagate through seeds. Like other Asteraceae it forms the familiar puff ball seed heads (capitula). One plant typically produces several thousand seeds per year (around 50 per capitulum) that disperse by wind. A seed production of up to 40,000 seeds per plant per year has been reported under suitable conditions. The seeds remain dormant for about a year before germinating.
