Scutellonema bradys (Steiner & Le Hew, 1933) - (yam nematode)
The nematode a destructive pest of yam, causing necrotic lesions in the tubers. It is found mainly in yam-growing areas of Africa and the Americas. The damaged parts are entry points for bacteria and fungi, leading to dry rot. Storing yam for 4-6 months can result in up to 50% losses. In Nigeria, about one half of the yams sold in markets are infested with the nematode. S. bradys can also attack other crops.
