Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker, 1863) - (yellow stem borer)
This moth is found in southern parts of Asia and in parts of Australia. It is serious rice pest in Asia, with the larvae boring into the stems and causing dead-hearts and white-heads. Different species of Oryza may be attacked, and yield losses can exceed 50̬% if no control methods are implemented.
Egg batches are laid in the leaf sheaths and the emerging larvae bore into the stem and pupate there when mature. One generation is completed in about 2 moths. The adult moths have a wingspan of 20-30 mm, with the females being significant larger than the males. The colour is light yellow with females having one and males several black spots on the forewings. The caterpillars have a similar colour with black heads.
