Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV)

SCMV is a widespread potyvirus with a broad host range. It causes important diseases of maize, sorghum and sugarcane. The leaf symptoms on maize include chlorotic mottling, mild mosaic and stunting. Yield losses on maize can be as high as 30-50%.

The virus is transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent manner, but plants can be also infected mechanically. Although resistant cultivars have been developed, the disease is still a threat to agriculture.

Vernacular names
