Rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV)
The virus is the type species of the genus Oryzavirus. It infects rice in Asia and can cause serious yield losses. It is transmitted by the brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) in a circulative and propagative manner. Infected rice plants are stunted with twisted leaves and ragged edges. Parts of the leaves turn brown. In plants co-infected with the Southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus both viruses accumulate at a higher level, resulting in more severe symptoms. The double-shelled particles have a size of about 75-80 nm and carry short spikes. The genome consists of 10 dsRNA segments.
