Rhytisma acerinum (Pers. : Fr.) Fr. 1819 - (tarspot of sycamore, maple tar spot)
This fungus causes tarspot on maple and sycamore. It appears to be native to Europe, but introduced in North America (Held et al., 2018). In North America, severe infestations have been reported from Norway maple (Acer platanoides). Other Acer species can also become infected.
The symptoms are black leaf lesions with black masses of stromatal tissue. Severe infections result in lesions coalescing and the remaining leaf tissue becoming necrotic, leading to defoliation.
