[Occurrence and nest density of leaf-cutting ants under eucalypt plantations in southern Bahia]
Revista Brasileira de Entomologia 42 (1-2), 17-21
Abstract: A total of 10 quadrats of 80 x 9 m were sampled in eucalypt plantings of several ages and also in a pasture area. In these sites nests were marked and specimens were collected for Iater identification. Ten species of leaf cutters were registered in the studied area. Acromyrmex landolli balzani, Acromyrmex rugosus rugsosus, Atta sexdens rubropilosa and Trachymyrmex sp. were present in all of the survey sites. Acromyrmex laticeps nigrosetosus, Acromyrmex subterraneus molestans and Trachymyrmex fuscus were found only in Caravelas eucalypt plantings of 198 months of age. At 6, 16, 68 and 192 months old plantatlons and in a Brachiaria decumbens area in the Mucuri region values of 75.0, 140.27, 243.06, 295.83 and 304.17 ant nests/hectare were found, respectively. In the Caravelas region, in 7, 17, 72 and 198 months old plantations, the number of nests/hectare were 47.22, 75.0, 123.61 and 266:67, respectively. In older plantations in both regions a higher number of nests, species and subspecies was found. The density in these plantations was equivalent to that found in pastures.
