Pyrenopeziza brassicae B. Sutton & Rawl. 1979 - (light leaf spot of oilseed rape)
This fungus causes an important leaf spot disease of oilseed rape. For example it causes serious epidemics in the U.K. and other European countries, with substantial yield losses as well as the appearance of fungicide resistance. The main symptoms consist of pale green leaf spots that develop into blotches of dead tissue, often surrounded by a white margin. Other Brassica species and cultivars are also affected, for example Brussels sprouts.
In Europe, new infections of winter oilseed rape start in autumn through airborne ascospores spreading from plant debris of the previous crop to the new plantings. These infections are often symptomless until the following year when asexual conidia are produced which disperse through rain splashes to neighbouring plants. Epidemics typically peak in early spring, resulting in patches of diseased plants in the fields (e.g. see Evans et al. 2003).
