Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) - (Louisiana red swamp crayfish)
This crayfish is native to the Gulf region of North America, but invasive in parts of western Europe and other regions. It can damage rice crops and is also a problem in fish ponds. Further, it damages drainage canals by constructing burrows, and often replaces native crustaceans like the native European crayfish, Astacus astacus.
The adult crayfish is around 12 cm long and dark red to black with bright red projections on the surface of its exoskeleton. It lives in swamps, rice fields, and areas that are frequently flooded. During dry periods it shelters in burrows and can survive up to 6 months of dry conditions. It is nocturnal and can spread by walking on land.
