Poxviridae
This family contains large DNA viruses that infect humans (e.g. the smallpox virus), others vertebrates and arthropods. Several genera are insect pathogens and are studied as possible biological control agents against insect pests.
The particles are enveloped, brick-shaped or ovoid, 220-450 nm long and 140-260 nm wide. The surface has small tubular projections. Two distinct infectious virus particles exists: the intracellular mature virus (IMV) and the extracellular virus (EEV) that is enveloped and may be enclosed in a protein structure. The DNA is linear with 130-375kb.
