Formulations of sex pheromone and trap designs for trapping casuarina moth, Lymantria xylina Swinhoe
Plant Protection Bulletin (Taipei) 48 (2), 71-80
Abstract: Recently, casuarina moth, Lymantria xylina Swinhoe has caused heavy damage to many fruit trees and forest trees in the Ba-gua-shan area of central Taiwan. The aim of this study is to develop sex pheromone lures and trap designs for trapping the casuarina moths. The results showed that the formulation of 1 mg of synthetic sex pheromone, Z-7,8-epoxy-2-methyleicosane impregnated in polyethylene microtube was better in attractiveness than the rubber septum, and its effectiveness could last one month. The handmade trap consisting of 2000 ml Coca cola bottle with 4 openings of 3 cm2 was more suitable for trapping the moths than other tested trap designs. In the future, the research related to sex pheromone techniques of casuarina moth needs to be studied for improving its effectiveness, convenience, and economy in use.
