First report of black sigatoka disease (causal agent Mycosphaerella fijiensis) from Trinidad
Plant Pathology 54 (2), 246-246
Abstract: Symptoms characteristic of black sigatoka disease have been found on plantains in the southern part of the island of Trinidad. The fungus isolated from lesions was identified as Mycosphaerella fijiensis, based on its morphology and upon further examinations by CABI Bioscience, U.K. Farmers' reports suggest that the disease may have been present in Trinidad since 2002. A detailed survey in an approximately five kilometre radius from the first site revealed three plantain fields severely infected. The disease has been present in Venezuela since 1991, a possible source of origin.
