First report of watermelon charcoal rot (Macrophomina phaseolina) in China
Plant Disease 106 (5), 1521-1521
Abstract: During 2018 and 2019, watermelon plants (Citrullus lanatus) grown in Shanghai, China were observed with charcoal rot symptoms causing premature death. About 1 ha had been investigated, and the disease incidence rate was almost 50%, resulting in a 40% yield loss in a single field. The fungus Macrophomina phaseolina was isolated from the diseased plants. The identification was based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequence analysis. Pathogenicity of the isolates was demonstrated by inoculation and re-isolation.
