First report of leaf spot caused by Corynespora cassiicola on Acanthus ilicifolius in China
Plant Disease 105 (2), 509-509
Abstract: During 2019, medicinal mangrove trees, Acanthus ilicifolius growing in Guangdong Province, China were observed with leaf spot symptoms. The disease mainly occurred on the leaf margins or tips. Initial symptoms of the disease were dark brown spots (5 to 9 mm) surrounded by a yellow halo, that expanded irregularly or semicircularly, until finally the leaves turned chlorotic and dropped. The disease incidence was ~30 to 40% in about 150 plants. The fungus Corynespora cassiicola was isolated from the diseased plants. The identification was based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequence analysis. Pathogenicity of the isolates was demonstrated by inoculation and re-isolation.
