First report of a 16SrV-C phytoplasma causing little leaf and bunchy top of Tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius) in India
Plant Disease 98 (4), 565-565
Abstract: During 2012, tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius) grown in India were observed with little leaf and bunchy top symptoms. The infected plants showed profuse lateral branching with a bushy appearance. In many plants, branching at the apical portion developed a bunchy top symptom with tufts of smaller leaves. Leafy stem was also common. DNA was extracted from symptomatic plants and analyzed by PCR using phytoplasma specific primers. The presence of a phytoplasma was demonstrated in the symptomatic plants and the PCR product was cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis showed the presence (99% sequence identity) of a phytoplasma belonging to the 16SrV group. RFLP patterns were identical to the 16SrV-C pattern.
