Additional ornamental species as hosts of Impatiens necrotic spot tospovirus in Italy
Plant Disease 83 (10), 967-967
Abstract: During 1998, ornamental plants grown in glasshouses in Italy experienced severe infections of Impatiens necrotic spot virus, together with infestations of the thrips Frankliniella occidentalis. Identification was based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with polyclonal antisera and monoclonal antibodies against its nucleocapsid protein. Results were confirmed by sap-inoculation to indicator hosts. New hosts for this virus were: Ageratum houstonianum (showing small necrotic rings and leaf malformation), Cordyline terminalis (chlorotic-necrotic ringspots and leaf malformation), Dianthus chinensis (stunting, mosaic, and leaf malformation or symptomless), Episcia capreata (necrotic spots on stems and leaves), Godetia grandiflora (necrotic rings), Maranta leuconeura (chlorotic-necrotic spots and apical malformation), Peperomia obtusifolia (necrotic ringspots and leaf malformations), Scindapsus aureus (necrotic spots and rings) and Torenia fournieri (necrosis on stems and apexes).
