Phytopythium helicoides (Drechsler) Abad, de Cock, Bala, Robideau, Lodhi & Lévesque 2014
This oomycete is widely distributed and causes root necrosis on a large variety of plants, often leading to plant death. It is water-borne and spreads rapidly in water through sporangia and zoospores. Therefore, it is commonly encountered in hydroponic farming systems.
The sporangia are slightly elongated and papillate, measuring around 30-40 x 30 µm. Oogonia are approximately 30-35 µm in diameter and contain each a single oospore, 25-30 µm wide. The fertilizing antheridia are attached lengthwise to the oogonium.
