Candidatus Phytoplasma aurantifolia Zreik et al. (1995) (witches'-broom disease of small-fruited acid lime)
This phytoplasma species is widely distributed and has been reported to be associated with a large variety of host plants and symptoms. It has been assigned to subgroup B of the 16SrII phytoplasma group.
Taxonomic note: A very similar phytoplasma, called Candidatus Phytoplasma australasia (later emended to "australasiae"), has been described as causing papaya yellow crinkle disease and papaya mosaic disease in Australia and southern Asia. However, the description was not in agreement with the recommended criteria for naming phytoplasmas and the use of the name "Phytoplasma australasia(e)" is, therefore, not recommended (Firrao et al., 2005). Further, a similar name has been given to an unrelated phytoplasma, see Candidatus Phytoplasma australiense.
