Resistance of jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) to Phytophthora citricola and P. cryptogea
Phytopathology 86 (11 suppl.), S92-S92
Abstract: Seedlings of ten half-sib jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) families known to vary in their resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi were stem inoculated with either P. cinnamomi, P. citricola or P. cryptogea to determine whether host resistance was common to all of these pathogens. Lesion length varied continuously among families for each Phytophthora species. Plants inoculated with P. citricola and P. cryptogea had longer lesions and faster rates of lesion development than those inoculated with P. cinnamomi. These differences in lesion development were significant for four families, two of which were classified as being resistant to P. cinnamomi. There were no significant differences in tangential spread of lesions, among families or among Phytophthora species. Based on lesion length, there is continuous variation in the resistance of jarrah to P. cinnamomi, P. citricola and P. cryptogea, but resistance to P. cinnamomi may not indicate resistance to other Phytophthora species.
