Reaction of tomato genotypes to infection by tomato yellow leaf curl geminivirus in Lebanon
Phytopathology 86 (11 suppl.), S71-S71
Abstract: Tomato yellow leaf curl Geminivirus transmitted by Bemisia tabaci is a major limiting factor for tomato production in many geographical regions. Comparisons of the nucleotide sequence homology for part of the intergenic region of TYLCV-Lebanon with TYLCV-Egypt and TYLCV-Israel were higher than 96%. Field tests, over three years on 51 genotypes under heavy inoculum pressure, revealed that TY- King was among the most tolerant genotypes, showing milder symptoms and producing significantly higher yields that susceptible controls. TAS-ELISA, tissue blot immunoassays and tissue blots using a cold DNA probe showed that virus concentration in tolerant genotypes was lower than that in susceptible one at the early stages of infection. The virus could be detected in the phloem tissue of shoot apices of susceptible genotypes, 6-12 days after graft inoculation.
