Abstract: A short, stereoselective synthesis of (+)-(IR)-cis-2.2-dimethyl-3- isopropenylcyclobutane-methanol acetate [(+)-cis- planococcyl acetate, (1) ], sex pheromone of the citrus meolybug, Planococcus citri (Risso), is presented. Since its identification and first synthesis in 1981, preliminary field tests have shown that the synthetic pheromone is a potentially effective attractant for the male mealybug. An inexpensive, stereoselective synthesis of planococcyl acetate was therefore developed, in order to make it readily available for use in monitoring and controlling this destructive pest.
