Phytolacca americana (weed) L. - (common pokeweed)

This species is native in North America and has been introduced into various other regions, e.g. it has become a serious invasive weed in eastern Asia. All parts of the plant are poisonous to humans and livestock, especially the roots. There are cases of infants dying after eating a few raw berries. However, people have eaten the berries after cooking them in pies. Birds also readily eat the raw berries and help in distributing the seeds.

The plant grows to a height of more than 2 m. It re-emerges in spring from the large taproot and flowers in the summer. The seeds can remain viable in the soil for many years.
