Phloeotribus scarabaeoides (Bernard, 1788) - (olive bark beetle)

This bark beetle is found in the Mediterranean region, where it mainly attacks olive trees. Weakened and damaged trees are preferred. Severe infestations can cause yield losses of more than 50%. The beetle is of quarantine concern in several countries.

There are up to 4 generations per year. The adult female bores into the stems of young shoots and lays egg into a maternal gallery. The emerging larvae create new, individual galleries, feeding on the phloem. The galleries can girdle the branches which may die off.

The adults are 2-2.5 mm long, dark brown, and densely covered with yellowish hair. Three of the antennal segments have characteristic, leaf-like extensions (see illustralions below).
