Peronospora arborescens (Berk.) de Bary 1855

This oomycete is widely distributed and causes mainly downy mildew of poppy. It was originally described from Papaver rhoeas, but also infects other Papaver species, including Papaver somniferum. In addition, several other plants of the family Papaveraceae can be infected, like those belonging to the genera Argemone (prickly poppy) or Meconopsis (blue poppy). Infected plants show deformations, a light yellowish green discolouration, and gray-violet mycelium on the lower leaf surface during moist conditions.
