Perkinsiella saccharicida Kirkaldy, 1903 - (sugarcane delphacid)
The origin of this delphacid as well as that of sugarcane is believed to be the region around Papua New Guinea. The planthopper is now widely distributed in the sugarcane growing areas of Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. Although the insect has been recorded on a few other plants, it apparently breeds exclusively on sugarcane, where high populations can develop. It is also is a vector of the Fiji disease virus. However, economic losses on sugarcane have been rarely reported.
The adult hoppers are 5-6 mm long, brownish with a broad, lighter dorsal stripe on the head and pronotum. The development from eggs to adults through five nymphal stages lasts around one month and there are several generations per year.
