Periplaneta Burmeister, 1838

This genus of cockroaches contains around 50 species and several of them are serious pests in houses and stores, like Periplaneta americana or Periplaneta fuliginosa. They are mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions, but can also occur indoors in temperate regions, e.g. in greenhouses, stores and zoological gardens.

Apart from being hygienic pests on food items they also produce allergens. The adults are 2-4 cm long. Compared to other cockroaches, the genus can be recognized, among others, by the wings extending beyond the tip of the abdomen and the ventral margin of the fore femur bearing numerous spines. These spines decrease gradually towards the apex which bears 3 large spines.
