This moth is native to Africa and has been introduced into in South - and Central America, where it mines the leaves of coffee trees (its only host). The adults have a wing-span of about 6-7 mm and are silvery white. They lay their eggs on the surface of coffee leaves and the hatching larvae bore into the leaves forming the mines. P. coffeella has a short life cycle and the larval stages last only about 10 days. Up to 12 generations can develop in a year.
