Paranthrene simulans (Grote, 1881) - (red oak clearwing borer)
This clearwing moth is found in eastern and some central parts of North America, where it breeds in the lower trunk of chestnut and oak trees. The damage causes bark swelling, retards the growth of the trees, and can promote decay. The insect has a life cycle of 2 years and adults have a wingspan of 3-3½ cm.
