Orthotospovirus citrullonecrosis

Assigned virus:
watermelon bud necrosis virus (WBNV)

The watermelon bud necrosis virus can cause complete crop losses on watermelon in India. The symptoms include shortened internodes, upright growth of younger shoots and necrosis on apical buds, stems, petioles and fruit stalks. Infected plants produce unmarketable small, deformed fruits with an uneven surface and necrotic or chlorotic rings. Other cucurbits, such as cucumber, ridge gourd and muskmelon can also become infected with the virus. It is mainly transmitted by Thrips palmi.
