This genus is widely distributed and includes around 40 species of small wasps which are egg parasitoids of beetles from the families Buprestidae and Cerambycidae, or flies from the family Asilidae. Some of these have been studied as biological control agents of exotic brupestid and long-horned beetles. Of special interest are those that parasitise eggs of the invasive emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis, which has killed many ash trees in North America. Oobius agrili is native to eastern Asia and has been released in North America against A. planipennis.
