Neotoma Say & Ord, 1825 - (woodrats)

This genus of rat-like rodents occurs in North and Central America and contains around 20 species. They have a body length of around 20 cm with the tail being usually a little bit shorter. Many species construct large and often elaborate nests (middens) on the ground around the base of trees or between rocks using twigs, pieces of wood and other plant materials. Several species are considered pests, when they damage crops or are carriers of human diseases.
