Neodiprion lecontei (Fitch) - (red-headed pine sawfly)

This sawfly is a defoliating pest of pine trees in eastern North America. Outbreaks have been recorded periodically and last 1-2 years. Mainly young pines (< 5 m in height) are infested and their growth is retarded as a result of such attacks.

A female sawfly lays its eggs inside the pine needles, usually the whole batch (about 100-150) on a single branch. The emerging caterpillars feed in groups until the branch is defoliated and then move to another branch. Larval development is completed after around 4 weeks. The caterpillars then drop to the ground for pupation.
