Nasutitermes corniger (Motschulsky, 1855) - (conehead termite)
This termite is native to tropical parts of Central and South America. It has spread to Florida (first record 2001) where eradication attempts were started in 2003. Although populations in the original location have been eliminated, four new infested areas had been detected by 2012.
N. corniger is an arboreal species which builds nests in the upper parts of trees. Characteristic foraging trails lead to the nests. The termite can infest wooden structures. Mature colonies typically contain several 100,000 insects.
