Nasutitermes Dudley, 1890 - (nasute termites)
This genus of termites is found in tropical regions and several species are regarded as pests of wooden structures. They are typically found in moist wood like fence posts, but may also attack living trees. Several species build mounds while others construct arboreal nests, but with part of the colony also living underground.
Some species have been accidentally introduced into other countries. For example, Nasutitermes corniger is native to parts of Central and South America and has spread to Florida around 2000. The genus is characterized by a beak-like snout which secretes a repellent substance.
