Abstract: Within a research program on ecological effects of growing Bt maize (Cry1Ab), the structure of arthropod communities in conventional non-insecticide treated maize fields was investigated in Oderbruch landscape (state Brandenburg) in the years 2000 to 2006. The methods used were counts, whole-plant harvests with arthropod determination in laboratory and pitfall trappings. The European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) occurred in the range of economic threshold (0.43 larvae per stem), and seems to live relatively unrivalled and unrelated to other arthropod taxa in maize fields. Other pests such as frit fly (Oscinella frit) and aphids (Rhopalosiphum padi, Metopolophium dirhodum) infested maize in different densities independently from European corn borer. Aphid infestation rose up to the end of maize flowering and caused remarkable densities in most of the years; and induced a high presence of polyphagous and aphid-specific predators in that period. The potential of natural enemies of European corn borer was low. Estimations considering our results showed that about 1,000 arthropod species occurred in the maize fields.
