Aspergillosis in desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria Forsk)
Mycopathologia 57 (3), 135-138
Abstract: An investigation into the aetiopathogenesis of aspergillosis, a disease which caused high mortality in a laboratory stock of Schistocerca gregaria in India, is described. The infection, caused by the fungus Aspergillus flavus, first appeared in the form of pink to brownish black spots on the thorax and body, mostly near the attachment of the legs, followed by hardening of the affected regions, paralysis, and twitching of the legs. The presence of the fungus was demonstrated in the lesions, and it was also seen invading deeper tissues including muscle, walls of the intestine, and the haemocoel. No cellular reaction was observed. A. flavus was also isolated from the air, floor and walls of the breeding cabin, acting as the source of infection which was disseminated by air currents.
