The genus Mus contains between 30 and 40 species of small, terrestrial rodents which are mainly active during the night. The house mouse, Mus musculus, is an important household and storage pest. It also damages field crops in some areas. There are few reports of other species causing damage. Mus booduga damages field crops in India.
The genus is native to Europe, Asia and Africa with the house mouse having spread to other regions. The species of Mus reach a length of 5-12 cm, without tail which measures an additional 3 to 12 cm. The fur has a brownish or greyish colour with a lighter belly. In the wild, the species feed on seeds, roots and other plant parts, sometimes also on insects.
