Monilinia oxycocci (Woronin) Honey 1936
This fungus causes the cottonball disease of cranberry, infecting both the commercially grown cranberries in North America as well as wild cranberries (Vaccinium oxycoccos) in Europe. Infected fruits contain cotton-like mycelia, do not ripen normally, shrivel and mummify.
The fungus overwinters inside the mummified fruits. Mushroom-like apothecia, 2-5 cm long, grow out of the mummified fruits in spring. These release ascospores which disperse by wind and infect the new Vaccinium shoots, causing shoot blight. Infected shoots produce conidia that again disperse by wind, infect flowers, the ovaries and eventually the developing fruits.
