[Infestation of indigenous (Quercus robur) and introduced oaks (Quercus rubra) by seed insects - Interaction of plant compounds and larvae development]
Mitteilungen der deutschen Gesellschaft für allgemeine und angewandte Entomologie 14, 41-44
Abstract: In the present study the effects of introduced Red oak on seed insect development are analysed. Therefore acorns of indigenous Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur) and introduced Red Oak (Quercus rubra) were collected at two managed forest sites in Southern Bavaria. The acorns were analysed in laboratory in two different ways: 1) emergence of weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Curculio sp.) and tortricid larvae (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), 2) the analysis of nutrients and secondary compounds. Almost no larvae of the monophagous weevils developed in Red Oak acorns. By contrast polyphagous tortricid larvae emerged from these fruits, but in lower numbers compared to Pedunculate Oak. This result could be traced back to differences in nutrient and secondary compounds of Pedunculate Oak- and Red Oak acorns. While Red Oak acorns had lower nutrient contents compared to pedunculate oak, a significantly higher amount of phenolic compounds was detected. Polyphagous species like tortricids might be able to cope better with the ingredients of the neophyt than monophagous weevils.
