The genus is widely distributed, mainly in temperate regions and is closely related to the genus Grapholita. It includes more than 200 species, with important pests of fruits and nuts. Some species feed on seeds, buds and flowers. The species are predominantly monophagous or oligophagous. The apple codling moth, Cydia pomonella, is the most important pest in this genus.

The species are typically small moths with a wingspan of 10-20 mm, often with a greyish or brownish colouration of the forewings. They are mainly characterized by their wing venation and labial palpi.
