Metarhizium acridum (entomopathogen) (Driver & Milner) J.F. Bisch., Rehner & Humber 2009
This fungus is widely distributed and has been reported mainly from tropical and subtropical regions. The predominant hosts belong to the order Orthoptera like locusts and grasshoppers, but infections have been also reported in other insect groups.
M. acridum is closely related to Metarhizium anisopliae and until 2009 was considered to be part or a variety of that species. In some publications this species has also been misidentified as Metarhizium flavoviride. M. acridum has egg-shaped condia, in contrast to the cylindrical conidia common of most other Metarhizium species.
