Megaselia (crop pests) Rondani, 1856

This is a very large genus of small flies. It contains around 1,500 species and in some countries the majority of species from the family Phoridae have been assigned to this genus. The biology of the genus is very diverse and ranges from species infesting mushrooms and crops (this group is covered here), to species that are predators, parasitoids (see Megaselia as parasitoids) or kleptoparasites to omnivorous species that, for example, even feed on wounds, causing traumatic myiasis. Basically, most species appear to be polyphagous scavengers.
